Huh?

Huh?

Molly says that when someone puts their mouth in a circle, it means “Huh?”. She pointed this out in a couple of pictures from her books, with a someone wearing a small circle for their mouth and looking a little confused.

Actually, “Huh?” may be Molly’s favorite new word.  She says it pretty often, and in such a funny way, always with a playful element of surprise and a high pitch at the end.  She’ll get in her car seat and seconds hold up a coloring book and say “Huh?” , as in “I didn’t know that’s where this was!”  Or put her shoes on backwards and say “Huh?”  Last night Molly stuck her head in the laundry hamper and said “Huh?”.  It’s not clear what that was about.

Anyways, I wish I could capture it on video, but it’s much to quick to get.  This photo will have to suffice.  Huh?

Nanny High Rollers

Today I got a call that we had a special delivery.  Would I be home between 12:00 and 12:15 to collect it?  At first, I thought this was a trick or a joke.  But I said yes and prepared myself for anything.  I mean, normally you don’t have to be there to receive a normal package. UPS or FedEx don’t call ahead to let you know they’re on the way.

So at 12:15 I found myself signing for a box of homemade chocolate chip cookies, still warm from the oven.  They turned out to be from our nanny agency.  We had hired so many babysitters over the summer that they thought it necessary to thank us by having a batch of homemade cookies delivered.  Sure, it was nice to get the very, very yummy cookies.  But it was a shock.  I can honestly say this is the first time I have been treated like a “high roller”, with unexplained gifts of appreciation like this.  Of course it makes sense now that babysitters would be what pushed us over.

Had we really been using that many babysitters?

Yes.  Yes, we had.  With Claire out of school and in lots of half-day camps, we had been burning through the sitters and camps.  It is nice (on the wallet) to have the kids back in school!

But Claire loved some of her sitters.  She would just play Legos with the best of them for hours, literally like 4 hours of straight Legos.  Lots of the sitters were  interesting people, too.  There were a couple of real musicians who had shows that night.  There was a screenwriter.  A police trainee.  Even some career sitters.  In the end, some great afternoons for Claire and some warm cookies just might be worth the small fortune we paid for then.

  • 2 loads for Claire  post-recovery sanitation
  • 1 load to clean the giant dog towel after taking Muffin to the groomer
  • 3 loads for Molly urine accidents on car seat
  • 1 load for Muffin urine “accident” on Claire’s bed
  • 1 load of guest sheets

  • 1 load of wet swimming gear from Friday evening swimming

I will refrain from enumerating all the babysitting checks this week from half-day camps and sick days.

Hard (and Funny) Landing

Claire’s first grade class had an end-of-the-year party this afternoon.  The entire two hours was all about the gigantic inflatable water slide in her classmate’s yard.  The kids came up with just about every possible variation on sliding down short, steep a water slide.  Eventually they got too creative, and some of us parents had to ban head-first slides, etc.

I just happened to catch this gem on video.  Everyone was okay.  It was one of many, many collisions, and it went largely unnoticed even by Claire and that poor boy.  But it sure was hilarious to watch over and over later at home on the big TV with the whole family.

BTW, Claire says that the boy she rammed into with her bottom had earlier told Claire that her face was beautiful.  And this is how Claire re-pays him!

Hot tub!

We went to a friend’s house to let Claire and Molly play with their own kids, a little younger than Claire and Molly, respectively.  After a rowdy lunch, including multiple spilled drinks, screaming, and food on the floor, we all decided to give their pool a try.  The pool water turned out to be too cold, of all things, so we put everyone in the hot tub.

I did not think the girls would go for the hot tub.  After all, Molly cries and screams at a bath that is even slightly warmer than room temperature.  And Claire doesn’t like her baths much warmer than that.  This would be their first time in a hot tub.  But it turned out to be no problem!  In fact, they loved it.  Molly swam around in the tub, and Claire put on some floaties and put down some apple juice.  Ah, the life!

Throw Away Bottle

This terse note came home from school with Molly today. When asked about it, Molly offered only an earnest, “I dunno.” when prompted why she put her bottle in the trash.
