CB Radio

A cheap CB radio set has been laying around my house for a while.  I got it free somehow; I don’t even remember.

But I thought it would be useful for keeping touch with the kids when we’re at an amusement park or hiking or during a zombie apocalypse or something.  Plus I like the idea of non-digital, direct communication and just saying “Over and out” a lot.

Now living in a three-story house, I realized this radio may have a more practical use.  When the kids are up in their bedroom on the third floor while I’m downstairs cooking dinner, it would be nice to just “radio” them that dinner is ready rather than marching up two flights of stairs (#firstworldproblems).  I’m all for moderate exercise, but I go up and down these stairs enough already and would rather just “ping” them if I have a saucepan full of marinara sauce bubbling.

Finally, today I got enough AA batteries together to make this happen.  Molly was really into the idea of using the CB radio!  I always love her enthusiasm for things like this and going to see the goats down the street.  I gave Molly a handset, and she marched upstairs to test it out.

Beep.  “Red 2, the is Ranger 5.  Come in.”, I said.

Molly’s voice crackled (yes, crackled!) over the air.  “Red 2 here.”

I thought up these radio handles on the spot without a thought.  I think “Red 2” was a reference to Star Wars?  But Molly would eventually pick herself a new handle: “Alex 51244288”.

Red 2, aka Alex 51244288, acknowledging the readiness of breakfast.

We practiced saying “Copy that” and “Over and out”.  Molly’s sweet little voice over the squealing over the radio was hilarious and sweet.

At dinner time, the true test came.  I radioed  Claire, who was upstairs doing ROBLOX (TODO).  “Little Bird, come in.  Are you there?”  Little Bird was Claire’s handle, again made up on the spot without thought.  Claire acknowledged the comm and came down to eat some slightly burned chicken wings and pizza.

At bedtime, the locations were reversed.  Molly was downstairs.  I radioed her from the third floor.  “Red 2, report for bed.”  “I’m on my way”, said Molly.  She gave me a status all the way up the stairs and reported no major obstacles or intruders.

I think we are well on our way to avoiding unnecessary stair climbing and also maybe a short-lived apocalypse.

Clueless ROBLOX Dad

This is me in Roblox. This pic pretty well describes how I feel in that game. I’m just thinking “What is going on here?!” And then some random player wants to be my girlfriend. So weird (and, no thanks).

Molly and Claire are great tour guides. Molly is so patient and wants to show me the whole world! This pic is from Royale High, one of Mollys favorite games at the moment.

As a side note, Claire has been calling me “Bloxy Dad”.  I call her “Bloxy Teen”.  And Mollys is, somehow, “Alex”.

Somehow the other shoe was downstairs and across the house. Who takes off one shoe, walks across the house, and takes off the other shoe? 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 #kids #shoe #shoes #floor #flooring #bed #shotoniphone #austin #texas #mcgkids #converse #hightopconverse via Instagram http://bit.ly/2FYjjHg

Mr. Quadrister

Molly has named Mr. Quadrister.  She thought of that name while hopping around being silly the other day.  And the name has name stuck. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Now Claire is Sister Quadrister.

And Molly is Hula Girl.

Molly: Scientist of the week

Molly showed a cool magic trick — oops, I mean science experiment — to her class for “Scientist of the Week” today.  Molly got to choose her own experiment.  She didn’t like any of the experiments from the standard class books because they “don’t have useful conclusion”.  She found an experiment she liked roughly relating to air pressure in a random kid’s science book that I had.

As you can see in the picture, she turns a cup of water upside down, and a playing card miraculously holds the water in the cup.

The class was pretty impressed and had lots of questions.  “es this work with orange juice?”,  “Does it work with sparkling water?”,  “Do you have to use a card, or can I use my iPad?”, “Does it work on a lower value card?”  To test the last question, we tried the experiment on a second card of lower value (2 of spades) to make sure it still worked.  What do you know, it worked!? 😉

You got a love those curious third grade minds!  And way to go Molly for a great presentation.

Sleepover Days

These are prime days for sleepovers.  Almost every weekend, Claire has a a sleepover.  She sleeps at Susies’.  She sleeps at Emma’s.  She has Susie or Emma over to her mom’s.  She has Susie or Emma over to my house.  Sometimes Claire has two sleepovers in a row and manages to stay awake and be in a reasonable mood on the third day.

At this point, Claire has probably had dozens — even hundreds? — of sleepovers.  They are so easy and routine that I just go to sleep and let them have fun and get themselves to sleep when they’re ready.

At the moment, Claire’s sleepovers involve a few basic ingredients:

  • A friend (or two) – mostly Susie or Emma
  • Molly – thank you, Claire, for being sweet enough to include Molly in your sleepovers!
  • ROBLOX – everyone whips out their laptops or iPads and plays the same game online while sitting next to each other on the couch, coordinating and joking.
  • The Office – always on in the background, and never gets old!

We’ve gotten a little tired of pizza.  Tonight I made spaghetti carbonara, and other times we’ve had, uh, spaghetti, or ramen.  I’m saying anything but pizza right now!

Anyways, these are the glory days of sleepovers, and I love it.  These kids make it so easy!

Christmas 2018

We got to Houston for a couple of days this Christmas.  My mom and I coordinated everyone between Austin and Houston, but we came up one stocking short, so we improvised and used a gift bag for Noni’s “stocking”.  Molly wanted to make sure Santa Claus was clear on this, so she wrote him a super sweet note:

Dear, Santa.

The gift bag is for Noni.  We only had three stockings.

Btw: the cookies are stale, you do not have to eat them!

Have a merry Christmas.

From, Molly

Some pics from Christmas Eve dinner, which we got on the table hot and delicious  despite being coordinated across me, None, and Noni’s helper, Patience.

We also saw an amazing and slightly scary performance of A Christmas Carol at the Alley Theater.
